As you indicate, political allies are hard to find in Europe. Unfortunately, they are slim pickings in the US, as well. People loudly exclaiming about the crooked politicians who maneuver their way into implementing laws in an uneven way will the next minute loudly demand a Convention of States in which those politicians could permanently alter the US Constitution, removing the protection de jure of rights whose protection has been slighted de facto.
