A comment by lyne on When The Nazis Aren't Enough

I am afraid that many people hit a chord here. The problem here is that unfortunately many people are positioned to criticise the actions of the United States, no matter what that country does. Mostly the US has been there to help when called upon. Sometimes that help was mainly to maintain the world's powers where they need to be; in order to maintain its own power. I know I may be getting comments about this bit... but we are all here to debate this. The US will maintian its power and position, this is its job and duty towards its citizens. I am not debating with the people who say "who asked the US to do that job?". I just maintain that the US is positioned to have this role in the world because of its economy, military, government, resources and geography. Unfortunately as mentioned by the blog, people tend to point the finger at anybody else but themselves. Being in today's political climate, America is considered the renegade country who convinced the United Kingdom to go to war in Iraq and when the UN (especially France, I am afraid to say) had every objection to do so (do I have to mention oil for food programme?); this TV program will be taken as it was intended... a slap in the face of the allied forces who liberated Europe in WWII. For all those who have not seen "saving private ryan", I wish you would. The first part showing the "debarquement" is especially poignant. My mom was in France during WWII, my grandmother was taken by the Germans and put in prison for a month because she (unwisely) insulted the Germans in occuppied Paris. When she returned she was mad, she could not care for her own children. My grandfather was part of the resistance, and the family had to flee to Brittany. I will not forget, as mom tells me the stories of her hearing that "les Americains ont debarque", her eyes -even after all these years- fill with tears of thankfulness. Please remember that this is the voice of a survivor, how many other voices have we not heard? Whether the TV program was good, watched, or its content taken out of context, its message should not be ignored and its insult should not be excused. Thank you for making that clear. An alien in the USA. Lyne
