He was received back at Grumman Aviation (were he worked) as a hero for refusing to do so despite crying from the Democrats that he "embarrassed" the country by defying "protocol." I remember him saying during one of many interviews following the brouhaha, "the American flag is NEVER lowered for any country. At least not when I carry it."
Nor should any American official bow to any foreign leader. EVER. It's not a sign of disrespect to other countries - it's a sign of respect to OUR FLAG. Remember the words ... " ... and OUR FLAG was still there...."
