TOP SECRET (Yeah, I know, I’m pulling a New York Times here)

Sheet n°1/1 28th December 2005

TO: whom it may concern (I guess that means you, mostly. And me, obviously.)

INTENTION:

1. OBJECTIVE

a) To regroup and reassess the situation in order to reactivate the sleeper cell blog known as “the dissident frogman”, and its agitprop-chic outlet “the dissident frogman’s Propaganda Bureau” and get both fully operational for a large scale winter offensive.

b) To reconnect with friends - beginning with a certain rock-solid Texan who deserves the Medal of Persistence in Friendship - and with whatever audience is left after nearly a year of Marcel Marceau Blogging.

c) To get an NRA Membership. I know it’s not strictly related, but I would argue that this is definitely a required asset for any decent dissident in the Socialist monarchy de France. Plus it’s wickedly cool, particularly if you’re not an American citizen.

d) To have lots of fun in the process, and hopefully to p* off as many Statists (both on the Left and the Right) and Islamofascists as possible, if anything for the tiny bit of extra added fun induced by the quiet confidence that they will blow a fuse whenever they’ll hit these pages.

e) To be at the tip of the blogospear to bring down the - now largely discredited - Fourth Estate and bring forward the bright New Dawn of the Information Revolution. To Make© Poverty® History™. To bring democracy and the Rule of Law to the Third World (starting with France) by tomorrow morning 0900 Zulu. To stop wasting my readers’ time with blatantly irrational objectives. To bring flowers to Mom and try to remember her birthday this year at least one week in advance, instead of one week late (sorry Ma).

f) To love Jesus, just because that - and a valid NRA membership - is a winner when one’s little joy in life is to upset post-modern French deconstructivist drones and the mindless legions following Mr. ‘M’, Prophet by trade and Pedophile by taste.
Plus Jesus is really cool, and really big on free will - unlike a certain self-proclaimed prophet and revealed pedophile, and the deconstructed drones.

INFORMATION:

2. ENEMY

a) The usual crowd really: Socialists from the Left, Socialists from the Right, Islamists and their dhimmis fellow travelers, Anti-Semites and Christianophobes, Sovereignists, Nationalists, National-Socialists, International-Socialists, Transnationalists, Statists and Stasists, in short, authoritarians and Idiotarians of all kind, race, color and persuasion.

b) State of alertness: probably low, after nearly a year of cease-fire. But hopefully that’ll change fast.

METHOD

3. OUTLINE

a) Clean up the existing content’s code, and upgrade both content and site’s layout to XHTML.

b) Streamline and consolidate both blogs (the dissident frogman and the Propaganda Bureau) into one. I noticed that a great deal of visitors have been searching for the Iraq arms trade graph here, when it’s in fact published there.

c) Get rid of the current content management system, far too tedious and limited (that’s Movable Type for those who care) and move to something truly dynamic and flexible. My requirements are PHP/MySQL, not necessarily open source (as this is too often the polite and trendy word for ‘crapware put up together by some unemployed thirty something coder in his parent’s basement’.) but not necessarily commercial either: I’m looking for a software solution that will fit my needs, not a business model as a fashion statement. Needs to be template based and the templates quantity, type and organization have to be fully customizable. The publishing backend must be as modular as possible, with the ability to let me define custom entry fields as default in order to separate English and French content (since I want to offer bilingual as well as language specific RSS feeds). Apart from that, it must have the basic blog functionalities (Trackbacks, RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds, etc…) and be extension/plugin ready to give me enough room for improvement (Podcasting, videoblogging… Who knows what sort of stunt I might fancy in the future?)

Contenders are (were, in fact) Wordpress, Lifetype (formerly Plog), pMachine Pro and Expression Engine

Wordpress is ok, but still too limited for my needs. It is in fact the perfect alternative to Movable Type, yet it brings little more (although I would argue that this ‘little’ is significant enough to switch, and certainly explains the well-deserved success of Wordpress). Plog/Typelife is very promising. I’m using it on another blog and that little gem never cease to amaze me. However, it still feels a bit ‘green’ and I’d rather go with a more mature site engine when it comes to this site.

That leaves us with pMachine and Expression Engine. Expression Engine is simply terrific - I’ve designed and installed enough blogs and sites with it over the past year to have a good idea. However, when I started to look around in preparation to this winter offensive a couple of months ago, the first price for an Expression Engine license was $149. There was no denying that it’s definitely worth every cent, but still: that was too long a shot with respect to the budget I voted (with myself) for the dissident frogman. pMachine being free and meeting most of my requirements, I started coding templates for it - despite the fact that this product reached its end of life (the successor of pMachine being actually… Expression Engine).

And then came Santa Claus: a few weeks ago, the Expression Engine folks released a free version (dubbed ‘EE Core’) that brings us a good chunk of the best this baby has to offer, for the same unbeatable price as his defunct ancestor.

So there. Expression Engine it will be.

I know my stuff here, so the work is going steadily (faster than it was when I was still coding for pMachine Pro, actually) and I will update the progress graphs on top of this very page as I go along.

It’s nice to be back - or at least actively working to that effect - as one of the things that truly did upset me over the past year was the unwitting neglect I inflicted to both friends and readers of this site. I wish to thank those who kept trying to get in touch with me, assure those who gave up that I understand, and apologize to both.

the dissident frogman, dissmissed.

Make© Poverty® History™.

the dissident frogman, rompez.
