The European Foundation in its Intelligence Digest # 175, quotes an interview with Winrich Behr, (who joined Jean Monnet, the European Union "father" and is listed in the honorary committee of the Jean Monnet association), in La Quinzaine Européenne, a pro-EU monthly:
I see no problem in transferring foreign and security policy to the federal European level.
Well, of course...

Winrich Behr apparently lead a rich and captivating life, considering that he served in the 6th German army commander's staff under Marshal Paulus and then under Marshal Rommel during WWII (Scroll down to #11).

Mr Behr holds the Knight Cross of the Afrika Corps.

(Blunt, heavy, persistent silence)

As far as the EU is concerned, Mr Behr believes that:
There is not much difference between the president of the High Authority [the forerunner of the European Commission] and a Heeresgruppe [army group]. In both cases, there is a chief and his collaborators who must give him solutions in a short time.
Sure. What can't be done by a Panzer division can be done by a bureaucrats' federation.

Glad to know that there are people with expertise around this huge bureaucratic, freedom destroying superstate.

The European Union. Pick up your favorite Socialism flavor.

We have all of them.

I just recently found your site via daybydaycartoon.com, and I must say that I am heartily impressed. Not only are you a remarkably good writer, I have very rarely heard or read such clear, sensible and right-minded arguments. You've won yourself yet another fan. In case you haven't already seen this, I recommend reading this blog: http://www.livejournal.com/users/kim_jong_il__ I find it very useful as a pick me up after having to listen to various diatribes on why the US is evil, and ridiculous accounts of how marvelous communism is. It'll take that nasty socialism taste right out. Thanks again. P.S. start at the beginning, it's funnier that way.

Eh, I am also new to this site...there seems to be some sort of error on the page, as I can't read what you post on the right side of the site: P Seriously, what you've stated here is one of those scary EU things. They declare their wishes for more state power so brazenly, it's striking. I am currently working on residency here in Eastern Europe, and I see the singularity of the EU drawing the East in. I figure I'll be ejecting by then, back to the US. Still, I don't see how a former military man considers his analogy sound. An army that centralizes all decision-making and solutions to an authority who probably does not have as much experience in the location as the regional commander, or possibly no experience in the military at all, is a recipe for Germany, er, military failure. I am no expert on the EU's dizzying structure, but from the jist of what Behr stated, it seems that this is what he is advocating.
